I’ve decided that I’m going to gain 50 pounds while I’m in the hospital. All I do is eat and lay in bed…not a good combination!  Unfortunately I get to have some control over my menu and the foods I’ve chosen are actually not that bad…some I’ve even called delicious. So to make myself feel better I decided to rely on portion control because at least if I’m eating pancakes every morning for breakfast they’re only 2 small pancakes…so it’s not like I’m completely pigging out at each meal. I was taking comfort in my new portion control thoughts until lunch arrived yesterday. First let me tell you about the menu options for lunch and dinner…there is a choice of 2 appetizers a side salad (aka small bowl of lettuce) or soup, then you choose your entre from a choice of 10ish things, then you get 3 veggies/starch from the choices they offer, a dessert, and a drink. So it’s a big meal, but like I said, the portions aren’t huge.
Well, lunch came yesterday and my portion control theory was completely blown out of the water!  I had gotten a side salad, a huge chef salad (you have to choose something or they’ll just give you what they choose, so that’s how I ended up with two salads), mashed potatoes, broccoli with cheese, 2 dinner rolls, a piece of carrot cake, and tea. It was crazy!  I added my side salad lettuceto the chef salad and ate every bite!  It was the best salad I’ve had in a long time. I had to take a couple of bites of the veggies (because I grew up as a member of the clean plate club and couldn’t just leave them sitting there untouched) and then I saved one of the rolls and the cake for later. Needless to say, I don’t think that I can rely on my portion control ideas to keep me from gaining weight…guess I’ll be hitting the gym when I’m able! 😉
