Great night!

Doug and I had our best night yet with Steven.  I went to see him this afternoon with Doug’s mom and while we were there I was able to meet his nurse practitioner.  We were talking to her and his nurse (who was great also) and I asked when they thought we would be able to hold him.  They both looked at me in disbelief…they couldn’t believe that we hadn’t been able to hold him yet!  I asked his doctor on Friday, but his biliruben was too high to take him out from the phototherapy and his nurses over the weekend didn’t mention it as an option, so I figured that we would have to wait until he didn’t need the lights anymore.  His nurse was ready to get him out of his “container”, but I wanted to wait until Doug was there.  Doug came home a little early from work so we could get back to the hospital before they changed shifts at 7.  We got back to the hospital around 5:45.  When we got there his nurse said that they have decided to start offering his 4ml of milk (that’s about a drop and a half) in a bottle and that he was ready for his first one if I wanted to give it to him.  He did a great job and drank all of his milk!  I was so excited that he did a good job with it.  Hopefully he will continuing doing well with it so they will slowly increase the ammount of bottles he gets a day until he doesn’t need his feeding tube anymore.  After he finished his bottle (which took all of 2 minutes…he’s definitely one of our kids and loves his food!) I was able to “kangaroo” with him for almost an hour.   Kangarooing is skin to skin contact.  I don’t know the science, but it’s very good for all babies…especially premies.  He was very snuggly and seemed to like cuddling. 🙂  It was an awesome night!  I look forward to getting to hold and love on him again soon.
