Doug and I went to our CPR infant CPR class this morning. It’s a requirement for all parents with babies in the NICU. I think all parents should be required to take it…just like we have to watch the SIDS and Shaken Baby Syndrome videos. After our class I pumped really fast and then went to meet Doug and Bobby for lunch. I had to be back at the hospital by 2 to nurse Steven again, so it was a really fast lunch.
Steven did another awesome job nursing today. The lactation specialist used their super cool scale (that costs $1,000 by the way…nuts!) to weigh him before and after he nursed. She got him positioned, but then left me on my own while he nursed. He did really well for about 10 minutes before he passed out. When she weighed him we found out that he had drank 14mL in the 10 minutes that he nursed! We were all really impressed!!! He’s taking 38mL at each feeding now, so he was close to half of his feeding! Hopefully once his biliruben goes down, he’ll be awake more and do even more.
They’ve dropped one of his bottle feedings because he didn’t do well for his feeding last night. So we’re nursing once a day and doing one bottle a day now. They would rather cut back and not wear him out so he can grow than try and push it too much. They are checking his biliruben again in the morning, so hopefully that will go down soon. Babies are typically lethargic (sp?) when they are jaundiced, so I’m hoping that once his count goes down, he’ll be a little more willing to take his bottles. He’s definitely still growing one way or another! 🙂
