Milestones

Parenthood is filled with milestones…your child’s first smile, their first word, their first steps, etc. One milestone that I’ve been waiting for is the first time my child turns a wall into their artwork. I haven’t been looking forward to it, but to be honest, I haven’t been dreading it either. It’s just kind of a parenting right of passage. Yesterday Macy hit this milestone and she did it in such a “Macy fashion” that I could help but to smile.
I was working in the kitchen and Macy had been coloring in the living room. She disappeared and I figured that she was in Steven’s room because she likes to play in there while he watches his mobile. Steven was getting fussy so I went to put his paci back in and out of the corner of my eye I saw Macy reaching up to her curtain with a crayon. I stopped and told her that we don’t color on the curtains, we color on paper. She had a very guilty look on her face and said, “Macy color on owl (meaning the owl on her wall)?” So I said, “No, we don’t color on owl.” next she said, “Macy color on squirrel?”. “No, we don’t color on squirrel.” By then I’d noticed brown crayon on the wall behind her…and that shed already colored on owl and squirrel. Basically she was sheepishly asking about everything she’d already colored on hoping that I said it was okay.
I went in to look at the damage…she had given LOTS of things around her room a little extra color…books, the wall, her closet door, the bookshelf, her dresser, squirrel, owl, hedgehog…it almost looked as if she went around the room and colored on everything just enough to see what it was like and then moved onto the next thing. I can vouch that washable crayola crayons really are washable! A wet paper towel and it was all good as new. This milestone was almost cute…I hope she doesn’t ever turn her room into art with a sharpie though!!
